BEHAVIOR MATRIX & CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Why?
A behavior matrix is built at the school level to clearly define the school-wide
expectations across settings. It serves as an essential teaching tool for adults and
students.
What is it?
A behavior matrix presents the school-wide expectations on the far-left hand side of a
table with one expectation per row. Across the top of the table, each column is labeled
with a different setting in the school building.
Within each setting
column, examples of that expectation are described in a way that allows them to be
1)
taught, 2) modeled, 3) practiced and 4) observed.
How is it implemented?
A school team builds the behavior matrix around the agreed upon school wide
expectations. Examples should be stated positively, be measurable and limited to no
more than five in one setting when possible. After the school-wide matrix is built and
agreed upon, the expectations and concrete examples would be posted in all designated
settings.
