Drivers Ed at PSCS
Your participation in driver's ed is dependent upon your success in school. NC law states that a student must be passing 75% of their courses at any time to get, and keep, and driver's license while in high school. Students must be 14 and half to participate in the DE course.
Driver’s Ed: The Basics
What is it?: Drivers education is the process by which high school students can get a learner's permit, the first step to getting a license.
How does it work? Students sign up for the course (all courses are being offered online at this time) including a driving segment with an instructor after the successful completion of the coursework. They receive a completion document for the course and request a certificate of eligibility from the school, both of which they take to the DMV to get their permit. Students then have 30 days from the receipt of the certificate of eligibility to get a permit.
Who can participate?: High school students who are 14 and a half years old at the time they begin the course.
What does driving have to do with school? A high school student can only get and keep a permit or license by passing at least 75% of classes at all times.
How do I get started? Access this link to go to the available courses sponsored by NC DPI. Choose the link for "private, charter, and homeschool students" and then pick courses based on your zip code. These courses, delivered by Jordan Driving School, provide drivers education to all Mecklenburg Co. high school students such that new sections are added on a regular basis to keep up with demand. There is a fee of $65 for drivers education.
You may also choose to contract with a private drivers education company. While the fee will be higher through a private driving school, the wait time will potentially be much shorter.
